Chapter Ten

As Marshall descended the stairs to face his friend, he couldn’t stop shaking. For once it had nothing to do with being cold or because he needed a drink or speed. He’d prepared himself for the possibility that Kyle might tell him to go fuck himself and never have anything to do with him again. It scared the shit out of him because after he’d run all the people he knew through his mind, he realized that Kyle was his only true friend. The myriad of other people he knew fell into the bar hopping partner category.

If I could face calling my parents as well as apologizing to Josh, I can face this.

When he passed through the double doors into the demonstration room, he saw that Kyle was working intently on adjusting a footrest on the most beautiful St. Andrew’s cross Marshall had ever seen. It was like an actual piece of furniture in addition to being an amazing example of bondage equipment.

He cleared his throat. “Hey, Kyle.”

Kyle’s head jerked up and he dropped the screwdriver he’d been holding. He rose, facing Marshall, and they stood there for a moment, staring at each other. Marshall grabbed his opposite arm, not sure what to do. Kyle looked down, chewing on his cheek. Marshall had watched him do it ever since they first met.

Finally, Kyle glanced up again before averting his eyes. He sighed. “You are such an asshole.” He surged forward then yanked Marshall to him, clinging tightly. “Why didn’t you call me? We’ve been friends for years. I would’ve helped you with whatever you needed—you know that. I was so fucking worried about you.”

Marshall hugged Kyle back. “I know. I’m sorry. Really, really sorry. I wish I could go back and change it.” He buried his face in Kyle’s neck. “I was scared. I knew you’d be so disappointed in me. You used to always say how you wished you were more like me.”

He turned his head to the side, resting it on Kyle’s shoulder, relaxing in his hold. “I couldn’t handle facing you. Then everything got so crazy, so fast. I got pissed at something Josh said while we were discussing the damn drink selection. Fuck, I don’t even remember what it was about. So, I bailed. Next thing I knew I was partying nonstop, I had a bunch of money stolen from my apartment by one of my so-called party friends, couldn’t make the rent because Galaxy wouldn’t take me back…”

He groaned. “But it’s all excuses. I fucked up. By the time I realized I couldn’t fix things, I was too embarrassed to call you guys and confess. It was easier to just disconnect my phone and disappear.”

Kyle tightened his hold. “It wouldn’t have mattered. I’ve always been here for you no matter what, you know that. Jesus. We’ve known each other for ten years.”

“I was so scared, Kyle. So scared.”

He let the sobs take him, let Kyle soothe him. There was something different about his friend. It was as if he was more comfortable in his own skin, more sure of himself.
